The term “Asian” is often used to refer to one’s ethnicity, race, or culture. Simultaneously, the term is tied to stereotypes that ignore the complexity Asians and Asian Americans identities. Although labeled as a minority community, Asians are often overlooked or left out of conversations minority groups in the United States With recent non-headline stories such as those about Tommy Le, Shirley Yamauchil, and Dyne Suh, it is important to ask “what about us?”
As the museum's mission statement asserts, “Asia is not one place. The ideas and ideals that we call Asian are countless and diverse.” We invite the community participate in this open mic program to share and listen to narratives of those who experience invisibility around their identities. Guest spoken word artists include Kazumi Chin, Jazelle Jajeh and Anju Kasturiraj.
Signs-up to perform will be available day of at 6 PM.
