Asian Art Museum Volunteer Application
We're delighted you're interested in volunteering for the Asian Art Museum.
We expect frontline volunteers to regularly volunteer for at least 1 year from their start date and to volunteer a minimum of 96 hours annually the equivalent of two 4-hour shifts each month.
Frontline volunteers help either with the Information Desk/Coat Check or in the Cha Museum Boutique. Fill in the appropriate information below for the volunteer area(s) in which you have an interest. Required fields are indicated with an asterisk.
Once you’ve completed and submitted a volunteer application, receipt of your application will be acknowledged and you’ll receive information about attending a mandatory onboarding orientation session. At that session, you'll experience how visitors enjoy the museum. You'll also receive information about how to sign up for volunteer shifts.
All volunteers will be asked to submit proof of Covid vaccination.
We look forward to receiving your volunteer application!

Do you want to hear about Thursday evening volunteer opportunities with Public Programs?
The museum's Public Programs team regularly produces live cultural dance, music, lecture, and culinary events which use volunteer help. Programs aren't on a regular schedule so there isn't a volunteer sign-up for shifts. Programs usually are on Thursday evenings in Samsung Hall.
Even though Public Programs doesn't have a volunteer shift sign-up, let us know if you'd want to hear when these volunteer opportunities are available.
Yes! Please send me information about Thursday evening Public Programs volunteer opportunities when available
Do you want to hear about Saturday & Sunday volunteer opportunities for hands-on art making activities?
The 1st floor Shriram Experiential Learning Center is a drop-in, hands-on art space which features art activities related to special exhibitions.
Open all 5 days that the museum is, the art activities are covered by staff on weekdays. On Saturdays and Sundays we have volunteer shifts. Volunteers help facilitate the art activities, keep the room tidy and well-stocked with supplies, and engage with museum visitors of all ages.
Yes! Please let me know when Saturday & Sunday hands-on art making volunteer shifts are available in the Shriram Experiential Learning Center
Do you want to be a SPECIAL EXHIBITION-ONLY volunteer?
Throughout the year we'll be recruiting SPECIAL EXHIBITION-ONLY VOLUNTEERS. Volunteers who join us for an exhibition will be expected to volunteer for at least one 4-hour shift weekly or 16 hours each month. The next exhibition for which we'll be recruiting SPECIAL EXHIBITION-ONLY VOLUNTEERS is Takashi Murakami: Unfamiliar People: Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego which will be on view Fri Sep 15 2023 – Mon Feb 12 2024.
Takashi Murakami is an artistic mix-master, blending the aspirations and anxieties of postwar Japan and global popular culture into critically acclaimed and iconic paintings, sculptures, and multimedia works. This is the first solo show in San Francisco for one of Japan’s most important living artists examining his multifaceted career through the lens of monster-themed works created over the past decade.
I don't want to wait for the next special exhibition to volunteer. I want to start volunteering IMMEDIATELY.
I want to be an SPECIAL EXHIBITION-ONLY volunteer. Please let me know when you're recruiting volunteers for the Murakami exhibition.
